Updates to the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code

The provincial government has released the 2025 amendments to Alberta’s Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Code. These updates are designed to align with the industry’s best practices and reflect feedback gathered through a public engagement survey conducted earlier this year by the Ministry of Jobs, Economy, and Trade.

For 2025, the amendments focus on the following sections of the Alberta OHS Code:

  • Part 27 – Violence and Harassment
  • Part 33 – Explosives
  • Part 37 – Oil and Gas Wells

For context, the Alberta OHS Code is a regulation under the province's Health and Safety Act, containing detailed technical requirements for managing workplace hazards.

As of December 4, 2024, the Alberta government's new amendments are now in effect. A transitional period is in place from December 4, 2024, to March 30, 2025, allowing employers and workers to comply with either the previous or updated provisions. Starting March 31, 2025, the transitional period will end, and full compliance with the updated provisions will be required.

I am sure there is a lot of curiosity about how these changes will impact your workplace operations and what steps you can take to prepare. Currently, the updated version of the OHS Code has not been posted on Alberta.ca or the Alberta King's Printer website. However, a copy of the regulations amending the code, including details of the changes, can be accessed here.
