The "Methane Matters: Getting to a Better ROI" event, held in Calgary on February 19, was a collaborative workshop for operators, suppliers and service providers. Global Power Technologies hosted the event to foster collaboration on improving the economics of methane mitigation solutions, aiming to create an environment where attendees could openly discuss issues and challenges. Key objectives included collaboration for effective methane reduction, knowledge sharing, showcasing best practices, and gathering input for innovators.

The workshop addressed the complexities of methane reduction, including technical, commercial, and data-related uncertainties. Discussions covered the challenges of balancing production targets with emission reduction requirements, the impact of changing regulations, and the need for accurate and reliable data. Speakers emphasized the importance of simplifying sites, eliminating unnecessary equipment, and improving communication between engineering, operations, and field personnel. The event also highlighted the significance of considering the entire lifecycle of equipment and the need for solutions that are both cost-effective and environmentally sustainable. Table discussions and networking opportunities were integrated throughout the event to encourage interaction and knowledge exchange among participants.

Current uncertainty in the market, including political, economic and regulatory changes, was raised as a challenge in making effective decisions for solving the next tranche of venting or leaking sources in the gas industry. We discussed how effective data and reporting, with proper understanding of regulations and drivers (carbon markets or fines/taxes) are needed to properly evaluate and compare options for methane reduction. Our attendees are motivated to decrease emissions but the cost and performance pressures can’t be ignored in allocating budget to these types of activities.

Ultimately, the "Methane Matters" event served as a platform for industry stakeholders to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and explore innovative solutions for methane reduction, underscoring the need for collaboration, clear regulations, and a focus on ROI to drive meaningful progress in reducing methane emissions and achieving a greener energy sector.
